United Pancakes

United Pancakes brings the classic and much loved Dutch pancake into the 21st century. They've been open for 3 months and are redefining the way we eat pancakes. They are making pancakes accessible to everyone.

United Pancakes was born out of the fact that there were no artisan pancake restaurants. They noticed a gap in the market and so this brand was born.

All their products are organic and everything is homemade. Flour comes from their own mill and is available to purchase in the their little shop together with homemade apple and pear syrups, old fashioned Dutch candy and their own branded aprons, t-shirts a baby ware.

The restaurant has a great intimate atmosphere with rough bare brick walls and lots of old wood. It's also an ideal place for kids and the staff are friendly and very attentive.

A new addition are pancakes to go, which is great if you need your pancake fix but don't have the time. It's cooked fresh to order then filled with the topping/flavouring of your choice to enjoyed on the go. We took ours to go as we didn't have much time and it was without doubt one of the most delicious pancakes we've had in a while. We will be back!

Hotel De Hallen

Sleep and eat in a former tram depot!

Vondel Hotels' sixth hospitality project is Hotel De Hallen, which opened in April 2014. The new hotel is situated in one of Amsterdam’s finest industrial heritage sites. The blue steel and rusty highlights of this former tram depot become an inspiration to each and every one of the guests. Imagine spacious surroundings with an abundance of plants, brought to perfection with modern and vintage furniture and design and decorated with a selection of contemporary art, handpicked by the owner Arjen van Den Hof. The modern facilities and quality of service are outstanding. Hotel De Hallen is a must see, the perfect place for a nice stay in Amsterdam and for social and corporate events. The former tram depot has been restored preserving the original elements and formed into a hotel with 55 rooms, a beautiful lobby, meeting room in boardroom set up, bar, terrace and restaurant Remise47. In this restaurant with French/International cuisine guests and locals enjoy classic and modern signature dishes, matching wines and surprising cocktails. The fashion and museum districts, Amsterdam’s breath-taking canals and the Jordaan district are all within walking distance.

Hotel De Hallen is part of a former tram depot that dates back to 1902 and is situated in Amsterdam West. Along with architect Andre van Stigt, they tried to keep elements of the former depot visible to give an industrial touch to the look and feel for the hotel. In addition to the hotel, the 2,700-square-metre De Hallen project includes a library, cinema, boutiques and covered food market.

De Foodhallen

De Foodhallen, Amsterdam's brand new and first permanent indoor market, is open. With it's bustling and vibey atmosphere, this is definitely the place to be seen.

Housed in an old tram depot in Amsterdam West, the Hallen and Foodhallen have been stunningly renovated and preserved.

We visited on a Saturday morning and had the privilege of first visiting the Local Goods Market. We tasted and we talked. We love the passion and enthusiasm these small local producers have for their products and we discovered some really fantastic new things. We'll be giving the ones really liked more attention in coming columns.

De Foodhallen itself is a melting pot of deliciousness; a culinary journey round the world. There is something on offer for everyone - hotdogs, hamburgers, Vietnamese, Turkish, Spanish and of course, home-grown Dutch.

The idea is a simple one. Choose what you want to eat from one of the many Artisan kitchens, grab a drink and a table in the middle of the hall and enjoy. We didn't get a chance to taste everything, so we will be going back to try some more and write about them in more detail.

We do hope, however, that they add a permanent market like one sees in Southern Europe selling vegetables, meats. etc. That would really be the icing on the cake.

Van Stapele

Listen up dear friends. What we are about to tell you is going to CHANGE. YOUR. LIFE! The search for Amsterdam's best chocolate chip cookie is over. And we're going to tell you where to find it.

In a small side street in the centre of Amsterdam, you'll find a little gem of a shop called Van Stapele. As you walk in, you're immediately intoxicated by the aroma of chocolate and freshly baked cookies. As you inhale the sugary air, you can watch the whole cookie making process right in front you.

And here's the genius part: because they are so confident in their recipe and we can vouch that their cookies are soooo good, there is only one type to choose from. So no mulling over which one it will be.

Do yourself a favour and get some today. You won't regret it!

SLA

We know food can be dangerously irresistible. That’s why all you’ll find at SLA are salads, juices, soups and snacks so full of flavor you’d forget they’re hearty and healthy, too. Bringing the best of both worlds, without the frills. We just eat.

SLA brings you an abundance of healthy guilty pleasures that give you all-day energy, rather than a short sugar rush. SLA spots the purest ingredients packed with flavor, and turns them into delish dishes. All you need to do is choose… whether you’ll eat in, or out. You can take-away, too.

SLA guides you through the maze of food that works. Both for your body, and (of vital importance!) our planet. Everything you’ll find at SLA is good food. Behind the scenes, we work hard to make it even better. Day in, day out. Our purposeful passion for good food means that SLA is continuously ‘under construction’. In close collaboration with our suppliers we’re constantly striking the balance between quality, locality and the seasons. We learn and improve by doing. And by eating, of course. Just like you do.

At this point, we can guarantee all our meat and poultry is 100% organic, just as the grain-based and dairy products we use (incl. eggs). Fruits and vegetables are 90% organic. Our beer is locally brawn, the wine worthy of our food and the coffee served with the fairest flair.

Noordermarkt

The Noordermarkt situated in the Jordaan district is a must-see if you have a free Saturday morning. Buzzing with tourists and locals alike, the range and quality of produce on offer is some of the best you will find in Amsterdam. You'll find bread, bundles of fresh herbs, fruit, seafood, cheese and mushrooms. Most of the produce is organic and a trip to the market is highly recommended. The market starts at around 9:30 and ends around 16:00. It's advisable to get there early as it fills up quickly.

Bilder & De Clercq

Amsterdam has of late undergone a lot of changes. There are so many exciting new places opening up and Bilder & De Clercq is one of them.

Bilder & De Clercq is a supermarket for the 21st century. The formula is quite simple. Gone are the days of having to think what’s for dinner and then compiling a list of ingredients.

Once in the store, you browse the 14 recipe tables and choose the dish you fancy. Take a recipe card with the ingredients shown and you’re good to go. All ingredients have been portioned according to the recipe. This means an end to buying more than you need for a recipe. It’s better on your wallet and less waste means it’s better for the environment too. Most recipes are designed for two people, but there are also some for those dining alone.

The store sells other products too such as organic wines, cookies, jams, hand-made bread and kitchenware. There is also a cafe where you can sit down and enjoy excellent single estate coffee and cakes.

Every week, a couple of the recipes are replaced with new ones, so that there’s always something for everyone.

There are 2 stores and you'll find them on the corner of the Bilderdijk and De Clercqstraat and on the Ceintuurbaan.

It may interest you to know the we are the chefs behind Bilder & De Clercq. We develop all their recipes and cook for and style the photographs.
