Toscanini

Toscanini is an institution in Amsterdam. For those of you who may not know it, it's one of the best Italian restaurants in the city.

Bernadette and chef/owner Leonardo Pacenti go back a number of years. At one stage, Bernadette made the desserts for the restaurant for a couple of years.

Leonardo has teamed up with Maud Moody and Nina Bogaerts to bring 'De Bijbel van de Italiaanse Keuken' or The Italian Kitchen Bible to life.

This comprehensive book covers every aspect of the Italian kitchen, the equipment you need, basic ingredients and the essential recipes that everyone who has an interest in Italian cuisine should know.

Go get yourself a copy while sipping on an espresso and getting some food to go from their new location, Magnani, just a few doors down from the main restaurant.

Breda-Amsterdam

Restaurant Breda, situated in the centre of Amsterdam, offers modern international cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. You can choose between 3 menus carefully compiled and executed by the chefs.

They have over 15 wines available to order by the glass, wine pairing with the menu and more than 60 wines on the list from all over the world.

The food is simple yet delicious with surprising combinations and attention to detail. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner which used the best and freshest of the season's ingredients. Also the prefect choice for lunch! A restaurant we wouldn't hesitate to return to.

Daalder in the Jordaan

At Daalder, situated on the Lindengracht in Amsterdam's vibrant Jordan district, you can expect fine, Michelin-quality cuisine in a down to earth environment. They serve either a 5-or 7- course menu, made with beautiful fresh ingredients, all hand picked by their head chef and co-owner from Paris, Dennis Huwaë.

His dishes are like works of art and with their many flavours and textures, his creations are a delight to the palate. They do things a little differently at Daalder. Their superb dishes are served with a smile in a joyful, unpretentious atmosphere.

The wine menu is created by Maitre Sommelier Tim Grashuis, who is also responsible for the widely acclaimed great service at Daalder.

Sir Hummus

In Amsterdam's ever more popular Pijp district, Sir Hummus opened their doors at the beginning of January 2015.

Founded by Guy, Dori & Lior, their quest has been to search for the perfect hummus.

Guy and Lior moved to Holland to study. During this time, Guy developed a passion for making hummus. After much experimenting, he found the perfect balance.

We walked in, drenched from one of the wettest days this year in Amsterdam. After warming up over a glass of mint tea, we ordered bowls of smooth, creamy hummus with delicious soft pita breads and Lior's vibrant red special salad. They only serve hummus 3 ways, au natural, with slow-cooked beef or with magic eggs!

The hummus is made with the greatest love and care. Dried chickpeas are soaked overnight, then cooked up and blended with Israeli tahini, lemon and cumin. We suspect that one of the secrets to this hummus's perfection is the addition of the cooking liquid while blending and balancing all the ingredients.

They also have a secret sauce, sharp and spicy. We suggest you use it with caution.

We'll definitely be back. This is pure, honest and real food - just the way we like it.

United Pancakes

United Pancakes brings the classic and much loved Dutch pancake into the 21st century. They've been open for 3 months and are redefining the way we eat pancakes. They are making pancakes accessible to everyone.

United Pancakes was born out of the fact that there were no artisan pancake restaurants. They noticed a gap in the market and so this brand was born.

All their products are organic and everything is homemade. Flour comes from their own mill and is available to purchase in the their little shop together with homemade apple and pear syrups, old fashioned Dutch candy and their own branded aprons, t-shirts a baby ware.

The restaurant has a great intimate atmosphere with rough bare brick walls and lots of old wood. It's also an ideal place for kids and the staff are friendly and very attentive.

A new addition are pancakes to go, which is great if you need your pancake fix but don't have the time. It's cooked fresh to order then filled with the topping/flavouring of your choice to enjoyed on the go. We took ours to go as we didn't have much time and it was without doubt one of the most delicious pancakes we've had in a while. We will be back!

For more information, please visit United Pancakes.

The 'Lachende Pinda'

We paid a visit the Sunday Market at the Westergasfabriek yesterday and were struck by a stall called The 'Lachende Pinda' (the laughing peanut). Tamara is originally an artist but found a passion for cooking and produces the most delicious home made Indonesian delicacies.

She also gives table d'hôte dinners in her studio for those looking for that home-cooked, authentic Indonesian meal. A great way for locals and visitors to the city to meet.

We tasted her peanut soup and it was absolutely delicious! Not only are her products good, but we loved her enthusiastic personality and the passion she has for what she does.
