Daalder in the Jordaan
At Daalder, situated on the Lindengracht in Amsterdam's vibrant Jordan district, you can expect fine, Michelin-quality cuisine in a down to earth environment. They serve either a 5-or 7- course menu, made with beautiful fresh ingredients, all hand picked by their head chef and co-owner from Paris, Dennis Huwaë.
His dishes are like works of art and with their many flavours and textures, his creations are a delight to the palate. They do things a little differently at Daalder. Their superb dishes are served with a smile in a joyful, unpretentious atmosphere.
The wine menu is created by Maitre Sommelier Tim Grashuis, who is also responsible for the widely acclaimed great service at Daalder.
Fresh Herbs and Spices and the Noordemarkt
Saturday's are one of our favourite days of the week. After a slow start, there is nothing better than to wonder the small streets of the Jordaan and head over to the bustling Noordemarkt.
We've spoken before about the array of ingredients on offer. But, with the cold wintery weather, we are going to get some fresh herbs to make a big batch of soul-warming chicken soup and the best harissa you will ever taste!
There are beautiful bundels of soup herbs that you can buy to add to your pan of steaming goodness. They also make the most amazing table decorations if you're hosting a dinner. Another thing we're also going to be getting, which you don't see too often and will be the prefect addition to our soup is lovage (maggi in Dutch). It comes in herb and root form and is similar in flavour to celery. We'll put some of the leaves and the peeled root into the soup, but the root is also perfect grated into salads.
So if you're going to do groceries today, maybe add a few of these items to your list. Wishing you all a delicious weekend. Happy eating!
De Weldaad
De Weldaad has two shops in the historic centre of Amsterdam, one in the Reestraat (opposite Hotel Pulitzer on the corner of Keizersgracht, very close to the Anne Frank Museum) and one at de Noordermarkt (the Northern Market) near the Westerstraat in an area called the Jordaan. If you are looking for vintage, art nouveau, industrial design, antiques or brocante, you will most probably find it at De Weldaad.
The charming Reestraat shop has an original interior from the 19th century and is located in the heart of the capital, in a shopping area known as the Nine Streets (negenstraatjes). You will find special and unique shops around here selling items such as paper, candles, gourmet gifts. There is even a real doll doctor! In short, a really fun shopping paradise.
The second store is situated at the Noordermarkt (Northern Market) in the heart of the Jordaan in Amsterdam. It's a former garage covering 200 m2. Three historic buildings are interconnected with plenty of room to explore the furniture, lifestyle products and unique accessories for the home from all over Europe.
We both have furniture and accessories from De Weldaad in our own homes. It's a style that suits us both and is easily combined with more modern items to create the look and feel you want.
